Description

Something I’m working at. The file viewed in both browsers is XHTML. All the magic happens in the XSL Transform. It draws the list items as ring sectors. They can have icons, text labels, and hyper links. The whole thing works even in Internet Explorer 6.

This wouldn’t be possible without a way to calculate trigonometric functions in standard XSLT 1.0. I wrote about how I solved that problem here: [link]

The toughest part was drawing cross browser compatible vector graphics. I’ve developed templates with a browser switch which generate either SVG or VML. I’m still adding features to that toolkit.

Templates for generating paths in polar coordinates were relatively simple. I mostly wrote them on the train on my way to work and back home.

There are still some things to do before I use this for navigation on my website. But it clearly is possible.

It works without JavaScript or Flash. It’s purely XSLT, SVG / VML. It not only works in all SVG supporting browsers, but also in Internet Explorer since version 6.
